Terms of Service

These terms cover the Quillard app and this website during the beta. They are written in plain language on purpose; the plain language is the binding part.

1. The beta licence

Quillard is currently free, in beta. When you first open the app it issues a personal licence in the name you give. The licence lets you install and use Quillard on computers you personally use. It is yours; it is not transferable or for resale.

At version 1.0, Quillard becomes a one-time purchase. Continuing to use builds released from that point will require a paid key; the beta will not be silently converted into a charge, and nothing you wrote is ever locked away, licensed or not.

2. Your words are yours

Everything you write in Quillard belongs to you. We claim no rights over your manuscripts, notes, comments or exports, and we could not read them if we wanted to: they live on your computers, and relay sync is end-to-end encrypted.

3. It is a beta, and it comes as is

Quillard is young software, provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. It may contain bugs, may crash, and may change or lose functionality between beta versions.

Keep backups. Your books are plain files precisely so that you can.

4. Limits of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the maker of Quillard is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages, or for lost profits, lost data or lost work, arising from your use of, or inability to use, the beta. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for Quillard, which during the beta is nothing.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, and nothing in them affects statutory consumer rights where those apply.

5. Fair use of the software

Do not resell, sublicense or misrepresent Quillard as your own; do not use it to break the law; do not attempt to mint or forge licence keys. Reading the files the app produces, backing them up, and moving them between your own machines is not just allowed but encouraged.

6. The website and downloads

Downloading the beta requires an email address and acceptance of the beta notice; the Privacy Policy describes exactly what happens to it. Published checksums let you verify a download; installers are what the checksums say they are or should not be run.

7. Endings and changes

You can stop using Quillard at any time; your files remain yours and remain readable. We may end or pause the beta program, and may update these terms, with changes dated here and noted on the Updates page. Continued use of a new version after a change means the new terms apply to that version.
